A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the head of state.
The official reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office finished the year before. This project was intimately linked to his government's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The development of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its duties in public projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing predictions to be partially opened before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised ongoing questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party urged an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This pause was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."
In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in total accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and running of these strategic initiatives.
