Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Medications Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that patients who stop using new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users purchasing such treatments should be cognizant of the risk of quick weight regain when the therapy ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a return to original mass within about 18 months.

Comparing Therapies

The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this medication leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals argue that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

People who have come off the medication explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if a switch activating and you become starving," recalled one woman.

The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is greater among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing behavioural changes.
